"First U.S. satellite Explorer I launched at 10:47 A.M. on January 31, 1958 from Cape Canaveral, Florida, powered into space by a Jupiter C rocket. Explorer I reached a speed of over 18,000 miles per hour and circled the earth every 113 minutes at an altitude of from 200 to 1,700 miles."

Sensors aboard the Explorer I detected the existence of the Van Allen belts of charged particles trapped by the earth's magnetic field.
