"Formation. The Atlantic Ocean in front. Fire Island in the distance. The San Diego was sunk by a German submarine - near here." Photo and caption by Lieutenant Estell "Eck" H. Rorick, R. M. A.

Battles between individual fighter pilots caught the imagination of people both then and now. Even Charles Schultz's Snoopy sits atop his “Sopworth Camel” doghouse imagining he is fighting the Red Baron, German Manfred von Richthofen. In fact both sides soon learned that planes were more effective when sent in larger groups. Fighter pilots protected reconnaissance planes and bombing was carried out by squadrons of planes. Pilots had to practice flying in formation as shown by this group of Jennys.
